Indications/Uses
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 50 mg. For some patients, 100 mg may be necessary. Do not take >300 mg in 24 hr. Patient w/ mild to moderate hepatic impairment 25-50 mg.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ any heart disease or symptoms thereof; peripheral vascular disease; HTN, or high BP despite medication; severe liver problems; history of heart attack; history of stroke or transient ischaemic attack. Past or present concomitant use of medicines containing ergotamine or ergotamine derivatives (including methysergide); MAOIs.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ liver or kidney problems; epilepsy or any other disease that reduces threshold for epileptic fits; sulphonamide allergy; controlled high BP; pain &/or tightness in chest or throat; chronic daily headaches. Check heart function before prescribing treatment in patients at risk of developing heart disease (eg, diabetic, heavy smoker or undergoing nicotine replacement therapy), & particularly in post-menopausal women or men >40 yr w/ risk factors. Risk of hyperreflexia & lack of coordination w/ concomitant use of SSRIs. Do not take to prevent migraine attacks. Contains lactose. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Not recommended during pregnancy. Avoid breast-feeding for 12 hr after treatment administration. Not recommended for use in childn, adolescents & elderly >65 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Drowsiness, dizziness, tingling; temporary BP increase, flushing; nausea or vomiting; sensation of tension; pain, sensation of heat, pressure, tightness or anxiety; feeling of weakness, tiredness.
Drug Interactions
Potential interaction w/ other antimigraine medicines eg, ergotamine; antidepressants (MAOIs or serotonin reuptake inhibitors); medicines for manic/depressive (bipolar) disorders eg, lithium. Side effects may become more common w/ concomitant use of herbal prep containing St. John's wort.
